rear end modifications

saddlebag rails:  Most obvious in this rear shot are the Hondaline Interstate saddlebag guards (they obviously fit the Tourer as well).  While not entirely consistent with the 50’s hot rod theme, I like the way they make the back of the bike look.  Not exactly clean, but attractive.  Update (1/20/02):  the Hondaline guards have been sold.  Getting back to the "clean" theme.

turn signals:  The turn signals are now relocated to area where the saddlebag reflectors used to reside.  Perfect fit!  I removed the butt-ugly rear turn signal/license plate assembly with a Rick Doss lighted license plate frame for Harleys.  Clean.  For instructions on how to do these modifications, click here.

other details:  Note the JC Whitney chrome latch striker plates.  Honda should have chromed these in the first place -- the paint was constantly chipping.  You can also see the Pro One saddlebag lift tab covers.

Note also the painted taillight cover.

The Solocruiser bar from ValkyrieThings was specially ordered without flutes.  Clean.  Also visible are the chrome buttonhead allen bolts in place of the stock flange bolts.  Update (1/20/02):  the sissy bar uprights have been removed in yet another concession to the "clean" theme.

I also replaced the stock passenger seat rear mounting bolt with a buttonhead allen bolt (just get an extra front passenger seat mounting bolt), painted black to be as invisible as possible.  I also painted the front front passenger seat mounting bolts after I installed the Corbin seat, as these are now visible.  You can just use black spray paint, as the bolt heads are so small that the crummy finish is not noticed.

I also painted the saddlebag hinges to match the bike.  Note: you must sand the hinges to rough them up.  You should also clean them with a solvent like Goof Off or lacquer thinner, followed by a warm soapy water wash.  Otherwise, the paint won’t stick.

Note that I have removed the “Tourer” scripts from the saddlebags.  I am looking for a unique replacement -- perhaps "1500" scripts from a 1960's VW Type 3 or "1500 Super" scripts from a Porsche 356.  Anyone have any other ideas?  Please e-mail me.

Installation of the DynaFlex truck stacks is covered here.
