lower temp thermostat

From Sal at Power Surge Performance:

We tested the 180, 170 and 160 on the dyno. The 170 made 2hp and 1 ft lb more over the 180, and that was only until 4500 rpm, where power levels went back to where they were with the 180. The 160 made 8 more hp and 6 more ft lbs over the 180, and that was maintained across the entire rpm range. There was a .2 drop in A/F from the 180 to the 160, which is not really a large enough change to require anything to be corrected.

We also monitored actual coolant temp with all three thermostats. Using an Auto Meter temp gauge in the intake and the Ford NGS scan tool, we found that all three thermostats ran the truck at idle about 6 degrees over their rating. The readings between the ECT sensor and the Auto Meter gauge were only 2 degrees apart. Just as a side observation, the factory dash gauge reads the same if you are at 200 degrees or 180 degrees.
