Magnaflow 14568

The Metco lower link traction bars interfered with the exhaust on the passenger side, so I took it to California Muffler to get the tubing moved.

While I was there, I thought, what about some nice tips?  These double-walled tips are from Thermal Research, a company related to California Muffler.

The outer skin of the tips stays very cool, allowing the big diameter tips to sit closer to the plastic skirt without melting in.  In these photos, the fitment issues presented by the Metcos are apparent.

Well, if I was going to go to the trouble of new tips, why not go ahead and get a new muffler?  Classic mission creep.  I chose the Magnaflow 14568 because it is relatively quiet for a performance muffler.  At idle, it is about the same as stock.  Part throttle is definitely louder.  Wide open throttle is significantly louder, with the distinct sound of airflow.  I was actually hoping for the magic muffler that growls at low RPMs, but smooths out at WOT--a muffler that doesn't exist.  I'll reserve judgment until it's burned in.
Jon at California Muffler was great to work with.  Jon did the exhaust for Chris Titus' Lightning (a schoolmate).

Jon obsessed on getting the tips just right, using a bubble level and repeated sightings from various angles.  Gotta love a perfectionist.

Update (8/29/08):  I replaced the 14568 (22" long, 5" X 11" body) with a 14468 (18" long, 5" X 8" body).  What a difference!  See the writeup here.
