shaker hood install |
|
The Keystone Restyling shaker hood is both trick looking and functional. But it is not easy to install, and the hardware leaves much to be desired.
This is not a one-time accident. Due to a mishap, I had to order a replacement bracket. It was misdrilled exactly the same. The photo to the right shows where the correct hole should be. Also, the spacers for that bracket are stupidly large. They are so large that the washers and nuts slip down in them, which makes it difficult to get the risers tightened down correctly. Also, they are made of uncoated steel, so rust runs down the side of the supercharger. The photo shows the supplied spacers and the ones that I fabbed from small steel tube stock. Note that these spacers actually go below the bracket; they are on the studs just for painting. I used an Airaid filter box, which needs to be trimmed down to seal properly with the underside of the hood. Details are here. I also decided to fab a grill for the shaker that matches my other Grillcraft grills.
I took some scrap material (Grillcraft also sells scraps) and cut it with a band saw to fit against the upper part of the opening. I left it about an inch long on the bottom, then cut out most of the material flush with the bottom, leaving three mounting tabs (red areas) to bend over. I then used epoxy on the tabs and at the top (green areas) to glue it into place. The paint is actually satin black; this photo was taken while it was still wet. The last step is to "match port" the hood opening to the airbox. Details here. |
